Blind man’s bluff poker is similar to other variation of poker, but with an exciting twist – your opponents can see your hand as well as everyone else’s hand, but you can’t view your own hand nor can your opponents view their own hands. This game is usually played by advanced gambles because although you can have a clue on your chances based on your opponent’s hands, betting any amount remains risky.

The dealer gives one card face down to each player. You now have to reveal your card to your opponents. Traditionally, when revealing the cards, a player would stick the card to his forehead. However, modern blind’s man bluff simply requires players to hold their card up without being able to see its value. A round of betting would then take place and the player with the highest value card wins.

Players take turns placing a bet on whether they have the highest card. Everyone would have a chance to become the first bidder for a fair game. When making a bet, the only thing you can do is evaluate the cards of your opponents and make your bet based on their bids.

As a rule, the higher the value of your opponents’ cards, the lower your chances of winning. However, also observe how your opponents bet because they are the ones who can see your card. For instance, if all your opponents’ cards are low, but their bets are conservative, you may have the high cards that keep them from betting. After all bets are placed, everyone would reveal their respective cards and determine the winner who has the highest card.

If you want to give a new twist to your favorite poker variation, you can use the same principles used in blind man’s bluff poker, by simply concealing their hands from themselves.

How to Play Guts Poker

Wednesday
Sep 17,2008

Guts poker involves making the best possible hand with only three cards. This variation of poker can be played online or in any poker room. Flushes and straights are made with three cards, but straights always beat flushes.

Before starting the game, all players need to ante in by placing their bids on the table. This amount would depend on the stake table you’re sitting in or the fixed amount required in the game you’re playing in. The dealer would then give three cards (one at a time face down) to all players. Each player would view their cards and decide if they’d like to stay in the game or to fold. If you choose to fold, you won’t have to match the pot required at the end of the game, but by folding, you end all your chances of winning the pot.

Every player remaining in the table would now reveal their cards to determine the winning hand. If you have the best hand among the other active players, you win the pot and you can take the winnings from the center of the table.

Anyone who stayed in the game but lost should match the pot, which would then be added to the pot for the following round. All players who have matched the pot are no longer required to ante in for the next round. However, if all players prefer to fold, everyone re-ante, is given three new cards and continue with a new round. If two or more players have the best hand, the pot is split.

Playing Manila Poker

Manila poker is a poker variation wherein you’ll never have a card lower than a 7. Compared to traditional Hold’em poker games, Manila game tends to have high-ranking hands. It requires between six and nine players.

The first thing you need to do is remove all cards with a value of two to six. Before you start playing, all players need to ante in on the pot. Everyone receives two facedown cards (known as hole) and view them. A first round of betting would take place, usually starting from the player on the left side of the dealer.

The dealer would place 3 face up cards (known as ‘the flop’) on the center table. Each player would now have a total of five cards – two from their hole and 3 from the community cards that they choose to use. A second betting round would take place, which is started by the player sitting on the left side from the first bidder.

A fourth community card (known as ‘the turn’) is flipped over on the center of the table. Another round of betting would occur before the fifth and final community card (known as ‘the river’) is revealed on the table. The final betting would begin. From the five community cards and the two holes each player has, they would make a five-card hand using their holes and three community cards of their choice. Each player would now reveal his or her hands to determine who wins the pot.

Be aware that in Manila poker, flushes always rank above full house since the lower value cards are in the deck; it is very hard to acquire flushes with the existing deck. Unlike other poker variations, don’t get too excited if you have high cards because it’s more than likely that most of your opponents have high cards as well. However, Aces cannot be used as a low card in making a straight hand in Manila poker.

Playing Razz Poker

Razz poker is similar to seven-card stud poker. However, you need to have the lowest hand possible to win the game. You need to use only five of the seven cards you’ll receive and make the lowest hand, such as an A-2-3-4-5 of any suit. Unlike other poker variations, the Ace is always low when playing Razz, while flushes and straights are not counted, so your score won’t be affected if you happen to make a hand with one.

Before the dealer gives any cards, a first round of betting takes place – a minimum ante is placed, which is around 1/5th of the lowest possible bet amount that you’ve decided on. Each player then receives three cards (called ‘third street), two of them face down and the other is face up. The one with the highest card showing would make the first bet, which should be equal to 1/5th of the minimum limit bet. For instance, in a $10/$20 razz poker game, the minimum ante is 1/5th of $10, so the person who needs to make the first bet is required to place a bet of $2 to continue playing the game. However, the player can also place a bet more than $2 if he likes.

All players receive one card face up, called the ‘fourth street’. Any player who wishes to remain in the game should place a bet, which should be equal to or above the low bet amount ($10 in this example). All active players would be given one more card face up, called the ‘fifth street’ and place bets according to their current hands. However, from now on, the betting amount should now be equal to the higher bet limit ($20 in this example).

If two or more players are still in the game, another card face up would be given called the sixth street. Another betting would take place before the final card (seventh street) is given out and a final betting would begin. Once all bets are placed, all cards are turned over to determine who wins the game.

In very rare cases when eight players remain after the sixth street, there won’t be enough cards to be dealt for the seventh street. If this is the case, one community card is dealt for everyone to use.

Badugi is a variation of four-card lowball poker that is played all around the world. Although Badugi originated in Korea, it has reached global popularity and is now offered in online poker games and even in casinos. Many people who first start to play Badugi assume that it’s easy to win, but once you learn the ins and outs of the game, you’ll see how challenging Badugi can be.

The dealer gives four cards to each player, one at a time. The players would then choose to bet, fold or raise their bets based on their first hand. A hand with all suits – Heart, Diamond, Club and Spade – is known as a ‘true Badugi’.

The best possible hand in Badugi is an A-2-3-4 of four different suits. However, you can only use one of each suit and one of each value in your hand. Meaning, if you a 4 of Clubs, 3 of Hearts, 6 of Diamonds and 6 of Spades, you need to choose between the two sixes and drop one, so you could make a 3-card hand. Similarly, if you have a hand with a 7 of Hearts, 9 of Hearts, 5 of Diamonds and 8 of Clubs, you need to drop one of the hearts.

You can choose to draw up to four cards to make a better hand. Just like other variations of poker, you should turn in all unwanted cards before getting new cards. Depending on your new hand and your opponents’ bets, you can bet, fold or raise the bet. Trust your instincts and your poker knowledge in deciding if you a winning hand. You have a choice to draw from 0 to 4 cards again depending on which cards would make the best hand. All players would then reveal their cards to determine who wins.
